Energen 2008 Art Competition Winners Named Energen recently announced the winners of its ninth annual art competition celebrating Alabama artists. There were 120 artists who entered the competition this year with a total of 183 entries. Eighty artists are now shown in an exhibition at Energen Plaza in downtown Birmingham. Jim Green of Lynnville, Tenn., won the Energen Grand Prize and will receive $5,000 for his work "Monte Sano Winter Afternoon." Green is a former resident of Huntsville. Jean Ignatz of Northport won the Alagasco Wildlife Division and will receive $2,500 for her work "The Guardians-Quail." Ashley Wiltshire Spotswood of Birmingham won the Energen Resources Landscape Division and will receive $2,500 for her work "Spring Island Marsh." Lynne McCain of Pelham won the Merit Award for Non-Representational Art and will receive $2,500 for her work "Grasslands of Alabama." Gwen Gorby of Vandiver won the Energen Employee Choice Award and will receive $2,500 for her work "United We Stand." This year’s judge, Robert Cox, is an art professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and was the 2003 Energen Resources Landscape Division winner. All winners, except the employees’ choice, were chosen on March 30. Energen employees voted on March 31 and April 1 for the winner of the Employee Choice Award. The exhibition is open to the public from March 31-April 13. The winning artists will be recognized and receive their prizes at the Energen Art Reception on April 13 from 3-5 p.m. The competition highlights Alabama artists who produce two-dimensional paintings. Proceeds from the event support the Art Supply Fund for Birmingham City Schools, the selected charity for this year.
