Black Warrior Basin and other areas
Energen Resources (ERC) pioneered the exploration and development of coalbed methane in Alabama's Black Warrior Basin.
In 1985 ERC leased its original 100,000-acre position from USX Corporation in a coal-mining area west of Birmingham. Today, ERC is the largest producer in the Black Warrior Basin, with 80 employees who work in the Vance field office.
Alabama coalbed methane reserves of 154 Bcfe represent approximately 8 percent of the company’s total proved reserves at year-end 2010. ERC has 786 net productive wells in the Black Warrior Basin and more than 147,000 net acres.
ERC’s 1998 acquisition of TOTAL Minatome also gave the company an operating presence in North Louisiana/East Texas. Today, this area represents approximately 2.5 percent of the company's total proved reserves at year-end 2010.
The company has 175 net productive wells in North Louisiana/East Texas and more than 20,000 net acres. ERC has nine employees in its Arcadia, Louisiana, office.
