Greenhouse Gas Management

Energen is a partner in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Natural Gas STAR Program. And we have been since 2003.

The Natural Gas STAR Program is a flexible, voluntary partnership that encourages oil and natural gas companies—both domestically and abroad—to adopt cost-effective technologies and practices that improve operational efficiency and reduce methane emissions at the wellhead and other facilities.

Energen reports emissions to the EPA through this program on an annual basis.  Since 2003, Energen has reduced cumulative methane emissions by 2 billion cubic feet.

Energen’s efforts to further reduce greenhouse emissions include replacing our gas-fired engines with electric pumping unit motors and retrofitting valves and other wellhead equipment to minimize the amount of methane escaping into the air. We also are implementing the closed loop flow-back system in the San Juan Basin to capture methane for sales; the closed loop system replaces the venting of the methane, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
