Corporate Communications Internship
Internship for Spring 2012 Opportunity Description
The Energen Corporate Communications Department provides a paid internship for one college student during spring, summer and fall semesters. The internship usually consists of a 15-week program in which the student has hands-on experience in the various fields of corporate journalism, photography, video production, special projects, media relations and web design. The intern will learn how all of these elements exist in a corporate setting and will apply concepts the student has learned in communications course work.
The Corporate Communications Department serves Energen and its two subsidiaries, Alagasco and Energen Resources. Alagasco is the largest natural gas distributor in Alabama. Energen Resources Corporation is an oil and natural gas exploration and production company.
Responsibilities
The intern must be capable of working in a professional environment and be willing to learn quickly. Interns will be expected to contribute to all areas of the Corporate Communications Department and work independently throughout the company.
Interns will:
- assist with visual story development and digital storytelling, including editing and preparing photos and videos for the web and various internal and external communications projects
- write and edit news and feature stories for an audience of 1,500 employees for electronic and print publications
- research and write content for the corporate web sites
- assist in the graphic design of print or web-based material as needed
- prepare materials for internal and external audiences, such as memos, speeches, PowerPoint presentations and brochures
- assist with promotions, events and any other special projects as needed
Responsibilities will also include a wide variety of special projects that require research, planning, writing, editing and attention to detail.
Qualifications
- open to students who are completing their junior or senior year
- college curriculum in communications, graphic design, web design, telecommunications/film, public relations and journalism preferred
- strong writing, researching and editing skills
- experience in still and video shooting, proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
- working knowledge of video editing software, InDesign and Photoshop
- ability to work independently and on a team
- ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
Students who are taking classes and completing their internship simultaneously may apply. Students must provide their own housing and transportation. Close family members of active Alagasco, Energen, or Energen Resources Corporation employees will not be considered.
Location
Energen Plaza is located in downtown Birmingham.
Academic Credit
Energen will complete the necessary paperwork for interns to receive academic credit.

Application Deadlines
- March 1 for the summer semester
- June 15 for the fall semester
- November 1 for the spring semester
If one of these dates falls on a weekend, then deadline is extended to the following Monday.
